Tempest, what are you doing?
So another infection happened. Actually, as it turned out, it was the same one as last time. See, the trouble is that even though I deleted most of the code, I kept missing one particular corrupted file, which then spread into the rest of the system. Realising I am not qualified, I turned to the help of a specialist who cleaned out the code and I was ready to get back to work on that Monday… only to find google still had the malware sign up. I enquired at DH and they said the site was still infected. So I contacted the guy again since he worked last time, only to discover the problem was he had cleaned out LWI only, not Tnemrot. This meant I still had a heavily infected site on the same server as a clean one. It doesn’t exactly make me happy to learn I paid a guy a few hundred for nothing. Even worse, he left the infected files on the server, still active. Thankfully, I was watching the thing like a hawk and managed to get them before they did any more damage.
By now it was early January. Every year I make a list of things I want to do before the year ends. In the past, I only missed five or so items on a list of forty but this year? Almost half the list thanks to the site outages. I wanted to see if I could get more guest strips done but I can’t link back to an infected website. I wanted to try and bring in more readers, but again, same problem. There were a bunch of writing jobs and I usually use LWI and Tnemrot as examples of my writing. Unfortunately, the sites were coming up blank when they were happening.
I hit the wall. I have books but I’ve sold less than a hundred. I’ve spent a few thousand on advertising but now that’s all money flushed down the drain since readers leave during the down times. And when there’s a lot of those, a lot of readers leave. I reached out to some other creators out there, basically begging for a link in the hopes that some traffic might come my way. None of them got back to me. And I am so far in the red when it comes to this career it will take a damn miracle to get me out.
Honestly, I was ready to quit. Just let the DH account expire and start again somewhere else. Maybe finally finish my novel.
And then I remembered you guys.
I remembered the people who came to my table at cons, picked up LWI, laughed as they flipped through it, and then handed over their cash to take home a copy. I remembered the people who begged for more Tempest. I remembered that there were always a few people on twitter, and elsewhere, who tried to contact me during the down times and ask when the sites would come back.
So this is me saying sorry. I’m sorry for almost leaving you in the lurch like that. I’m sorry for not being able to keep the sites going and let you read the comics. I’m sorry for taking so long when there was a problem. I’m sorry for taking you for granted.
I’m sorry to Fer and Tatiana for almost throwing away your hard work. And I’m sorry these comics don’t make enough to buy you the luxurious lifestyles you deserve.
This is my New Year’s Resolution. To immediately jump on any problem the sites have. To make sure the readers can come back knowing the comics will always be here. And to never take anyone for granted.
Wish me luck.
Okay, everything is back to normal. Heh, was worried for a second, and then Dan H from Dreamhost figured out what the config file was doing wrong. He also gave me some good security advice, so yay for that.
You know, if I was going to have to do all this from scratch again, I might have just up and quit comics forever. Seriosuly, you do not know how hard this has been. But thank you, as always, to the people who buy the comics and comment. You guys make it worthwhile.
Hopefully this is the last outage we have for a long time.
EDIT: Currently dealing with some weird error for comicpress. It currently has the blogs listed as the comic category and vice versa, which is why the comics aren’t showing. And there’s an error with the configuration. Currently working on it.
Okay, so you may have noticed the site was down last week. And most of the comics aren’t appearing. Well we got hacked again. Luckily this time I actually managed to get it fixed in a timely manner. Now I just have to figure out how to get the comics showing again. They weren’t wiped, they just don’t want to appear.
I really need to hire someone to handle this crap but I don’t have the money needed for that. Oh well.
Hope all is well with you.
So, as I promised on Monday, here’s a post on my thoughts about writing chapter seven, which also acts as the end of the first volume of Domain Tnemrot. And don’t worry, we are nowhere near finished yet.
This story was meant to be in a much different place initially. I first plotted it out in late 2008. Chapter Three was meant to be Morris’ last appearance for a while, but I liked what Tatiana did with him, Raid and June so I brought them back. The fourth chapter was supposed to be the fifth and instead of Angel’s character development, she was supposed to just be awesome. Chapter Five was actually the fourth and had more of a general back story on how the slaves got there. However, upon re-reading it I discovered it conflicted with the story I had written in the About section. Serves me right for not checking my notes. So I pushed it back, made it more about Dae’s personal back story and we got to see the actual ball (Angel and Mia were just supposed to leave then come back at the end).
Then I got to chapter six. I looked at what I had planned out, and then decided to throw it all away in exchange for what we got. I wanted a big ending and Morris getting his comeuppance was the first thought that came to my mind. An epic beatdown delivered by Dae and Angel in the ring as he’s humiliated in front of his fans.
Only problem was I didn’t know how to do it.
The glove was easy. I wanted to bring in something like it soon in order to make the non-slaves a threat without resorting to guns. I’ll probably have a couple of gunslingers featured later, but not for the moment. No, the hard part was the set up. I had chapter seven worked out except for the moment in which Morris is thrown into the arena. That was the part that kept getting changed until I sent Tatiana the version we saw. In a couple of versions it was the Ref who threw him in just to see what would happen. But I’m happy with the result we got and I’m glad you all enjoyed it.
As for the future, well I’ve pretty much scrapped the original overall plot. I have a few ideas, but nothing concrete. Chapter Eight’s been finished and is setting up a new arc, but aside from that, I’m going in blind.
This is going to be fun.
Have you guys bought a copy of Tnemrot yet?
So you guys may remember our past Christmas and Easter guest spots where other artists came in and drew Angel as something holiday related. Well Halloween is only a few months away so it’s time to start thinking about that. I have some costumes in mind, but there’s something I’m wondering. Do we stick with Angel this time?
See, I’ve noticed a few people are letting June grow on them. This makes me wonder if you guys wouldn’t prefer she gets the Halloween pin up. And yes, it will most likely be sexy.
So post your preferences here and whoever gets the most requests gets to be drawn by another artist.
PS If you want both, sorry but it’s still only one. Next year I’ll start the doubling up though.
