Yes, it makes a tremendous snap. Not like in the movies. It takes nearly a kilojoule of energy to break a human neck. That’s why when a man is hanged, he is dropped from a height of at least 2 meters to guarantee his neckbone will not just break in a possibly nonfatal way but be torn apart, and then it’s often a bloody mess as the bone perforates the neck. It is not a delicate event.
