About
The Back Story – A few hundred years beyond the modern day, inflation and standard of living have caused the poor to basically become animals. Because of the way they live, it was declared that enslaving someone unable to meet the required standard of sustainable life was actually a blessing rather than a denial of freedom. Slaves basically became pets, either acting as companions, servants, bodyguards or entertainment. One of the main forms of slave entertainment is fighting to the death in gladiatorial style battles. Tnemrot is one of the arenas used for these fights.
The fights are the only form of entertainment left, due to humanity becoming illiterate as visual technology progressed, and this medium being abandoned after CGI advances eliminated the need for actors, yet soon breaking nearly every major production company and television network, due to expensive flops. Live productions regained popularity, but since it had been decades since acting was considered a position people could enter, and directors too used to CGI models that would do exactly as they wanted, theatre looked ready to die as well, until a fight broke out during one play. The audience loved it and soon plays were nothing but scripted fights, with the fighting bands developed to allow actors to perform beyond human abilities. Soon, these fights got boring, and so using their slaves, people began gambling on fights in stadiums. This eventually evolved into the sort of fights you see in the comic.
The Fighters – Most fighters who enter the battles are already physically fit, but these traits are enhanced by special accessories that they are made to wear in order to make the battles more interesting. The wrist and leg bands are designed to enhance strength to superhuman levels, while also giving muscles and bones the tolerance to withstands such feats. The collars, on the other hand, are designed to give full control to the fighter’s owner. Using special controllers, the owners control every movement of their fighter when the controller is activated.
Characters
Dae – After spending years evading the human dealers who wanted good wild stock to sell, he was eventually tricked and drugged, allowing the dealers to sell him. Even though he is only eighteen-years-old, he knows many forms of armed and unarmed combat, along with guerrilla war tactics he uses against large groups. He got this from being a part of a rebellion against the dealers, which was destroyed two years ago. Dae was the only one who was not captured or died in that attack and still holds some guilt over it. Currently has a secret agenda going on.
Mia – The eight-year-old daughter of a rich businessman who barely has time for her, she was given Dae as a pet so she had someone as a companion. She’s quite naive, not realising how serious the Tnemrot fights are, just thinking they are fun and games. She also knows so little that she accidentally forgot to give Dae his collar before his first match. She has several attachment issues, latching onto both Dae and Angel very quickly, due to a lifetime of neglect.
Angel – Dae’s first opponent. At seventeen, she has been undefeated since she set foot in Tnemrot. She currently lives with Dae, Mia and Haze, but is still struggling with the trauma of her time with Morris.
Morris – Angel’s former controller. He enjoys the Tnemrot fights, especially when he wins, and when they’re not on, he likes torturing his fighters. After losing Angel, he has been a primary antagonist for Dae.
Raid – One of Morris’ battlers. He initially fought Dae and Angel for fun, but has since found the benefits of working with them. Wants to leave Morris with June and is working with Dae and Tempest to make that happen.
June – One of Morris’ battlers. A skilled fighter in her own right, June prefers to spend her downtime eating fresh fruits and wearing expensive clothes. Wants to leave Morris with Raid and is working with Dae and Tempest to make that happen.
Haze – A friend of Dae’s from before. Haze was part of a resistance group with Dae, before they were attacked and Haze was captured. During that fight, he lost his lover, River, and has since been recklessly suicidal from grief.
Tempest - Morris’ newest fighter. A computer prodigy, she is part of Dae’s plan to get Raid and June away from Morris. She acts very naive and childish, fascinated by simple things, yet has a brilliant mind underneath. She was part of the resistance with Dae and Haze.
The Ref – Domain Tnemrot’s referee. He has very loose morals, ready to bend the rules in order to maximise profit and ticket sales at the slightest chance. Is currently trying to get revenge on Dae for beating up Morris and causing other competitors to want to back out of the matches.
Hey there mate,
Your story seems kind of bland, but your artist really has talent. I’m gonna be keeping an eye on your stuff. I’ll pass your site around my group of people I know. Hopefully your name’ll be a bit more wide spread. *shrugs* I dunno how popular youi are so far. I’m looking for an artist myself currently, and you’re lucky to have such a talented one. If you know anyone who needs a writer, give ‘em my address. : ) Keep in touch. I can try and help if you ever need a hand with anything.
Sincerely,
Aaron
So far i like it keep up the good work would love more backstory on the world.
i will be checking back often
Great story and artwork. I look forward to the next update.
This is an interesting comic, and I’ll be following it from now on. A few things that could be tweaked: if a word is cut off in the bubble, there is no hyphen signalling this. That would make it a little easier to read. Character descriptions and back story could be edited a wee bit, but that’s just me being nit-picky. Are we going to learn how Dae learned how to fight this way? The character description states that he knows many forms of armed and unarmed combat, but that sounds like he was taught. Nice choice in comparing the slaves to thoroughbreds if they had been bred to fight. :)
Looking forward to more! Keep up the good work. The art is stunning.
This is like
Fahrenheit 451- human loss in reading and distraction
Really cool, I was going to say that I wished you included the “about” part in the comic, but it works better that Dae is fighting from the beginning, captures the reader’s interest
Thanks for an updare.
Wow. Most of the time when I mention your comic, I basically say something like this:
“Ignore all massive plot-holes and attacks on your suspension of disbelief. The story is cool, and the fighting is great. Just read, disengage logic if necessary, and enjoy the heck out of it.”
Now I read the backstory there… That is brilliant! Mainly because, I see that happening. As we push closer to convenience, as Apple gains more control and influence (yes I’m going to point fingers here), as we get more and more technology to help us be lazy, we will soon become -very- lazy. Similar to what happened in Wall-E (spelling?), I suspect we’ll lose a lot of basic skills, and suddenly the rich will be the techies.
(I for one would welcome such a world, but that’s ’cause I like the idea of this sort of thing as a story setting. I’ll probably change this decision should it occur.)
Techies are rich already.
Well, everyone likes an apocalypse before it happens. Then they’re dead, and they can’t like things anymore.
“Well, everyone likes an apocalypse before it happens. Then they’re dead, and they can’t like things anymore.”
Epically true.
What a great idea. I’m not much of a comic fan, but this ones is great. Go work and idea.
